Customize Menus in WordPress

For those of us who’ve used WordPress for a number of years now, we’ve seen a great deal of evolution. With every update WordPress seems to get better and better. Depending on how you build your theme, or how a premium theme is set up, you can create and customize menus in WordPress. A while back, it used to be a real pain to create a navigation menu in WordPress. You could only choose to list posts or pages, and hiding specific pages was a chore. There was a lot of legwork involved in creating your menus and maintaining. Now, you can do just about anything you want with your menus and WordPress. Most themes now include the ability to create more than one navigation menu. In this tutorial video, I’ll show you how to customize menus in WordPress.

For a few years now, WordPress is giving you the ability to add tag, pages and categories to your navigation menus. The drag-and-drop feature makes it really handy to order the items in your navigation menu the way that you want. One thing that a lot of people don’t realize is that you can customize the menu label and WordPress. This is definitely necessary if your page has a long name. Every menu item has a drop-down menu, where you can select more options. This is where you remove a menu item, but it is also where you can customize the menu label.

It’s important to understand that this does not change the name of the page. Your only changing the name of the list item in the navigation menu. For example, if your page’s name is My Graphic Design Portfolio, you can go in and shorten the menu label to just portfolio. This makes your menu neater and nicer looking. It also enables you to make a page name whatever you want to be, Without having to worry about how it will look on your website. This used to be a real problem, and a pain to deal with.
