Polygon Tool Tricks

When you’re working in Photoshop, creating complex shapes can be a real pain. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to create a circular badge or anything made up of a lot of smaller shapes, but it can be really difficult. Unlike illustrator, Photoshop isn’t as user friendly when working with vector shapes. There are a lot of little tools inside of Photoshop, which can help with shape creation. You just have to find them. In this video tutorial, I’ll show you how to use the polygon tool in Photoshop to create some complex shapes.

You have more control over shapes than you think. It’s just a matter of accessing the extra option that go along with the polygon tool. You can control different aspects of your polygons, such as the number of sides it has. If you create a star, you can control how large the points are, as well as how far the intentions go inward. If you create a shape with many different sides, you can use the intentions to your advantage. If you input values that are close together, you can create a wavy pattern. As you can see from the video, you can create a common badge shape by creating rounded edges.

A lot of people don’t realize that these options are available. It’s always a good idea to look at your options bar at the top of your Photoshop user interface. It’s here you will find extra options and features that would be tough to find otherwise.

What do you think about the extra options found with the polygon tool? The custom shapes that you can create just by using this tool will blow you away. Instead of trying to combine many different shapes with precision, you can dial in precise settings to create pixel perfect geometric shapes.
